U.S. Beans Face Cooler Weather

WASHINGTON - Jul 21/14 - SNS -- here was little change in the overall condition of dry edible bean crops in the United States during the past week, though conditions in some states remain cooler than normal, judging from the latest state level crop progress reports from USDA NASS reporters.

The condition of Colorado's dry edible bean crops improved slightly during the past week, while the percentage of crop in bloom reached 45%, up from 26% last week. This compares to 31% last year and the average of 33%. Last week was characterized by below normal temperatures and increased precipitation throughout the state. The lack of heat units slowed crop development.

Crop reporters in Michigan say fields in most parts of the Upper and Lower Peninsula are in need of rain. However, the Thumb received a decent amount of rain for crop development, even though there were reports of water damage to soybeans and dry beans.

Farmers in Minnesota welcomed a week of dry weather because it let them catch up on post seeding field work. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 0% very short, 11% short, 82% adequate, and 7% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 0% very short, 4% short, 87% adequate, and 9% surplus.
