U.S. Could Harvest 22% More Beans

VANCOUVER - Jun 30/14 - SNS -- Dry edible bean growers in the United States planted more land to beans and chickpeas than initially intended, boosting this year's seeded area almost 400,000 acres to just under 1.75 million.

In March, they signalled markets about their intention to plant 1.69 million acres. But, with grower bids holding firm for all classes of beans and not hearing much bearish news from net importers like Mexico, growers clearly felt they could push production a little further.

If yields are at their recent five-year average, dry edible bean and chickpea production will approach 1.36 million metric tons (MT). This is up 22% from last year and 12% above the previous five-year average harvest of 1.21 million MT.
