Dry Bean Area Jumps

WASHINGTON - Jun 30/14 - SNS -- Actual and intended dry edible bean plantings in the Unite States jumped 28% over last year to an estimated 1.75 million acres, according to the USDA's seeded area report for 2014.

In releasing the data, the USDA noted planted area is higher than last year in 11 of the 18 estimating States.

In North Dakota, planting was 61% complete on June 1, well ahead of last year's pace of 20%. By mid-June, planting was 94% complete with 68% emerged above the 5-year average of 55%.

In Michigan, by mid-June, the crop was 72% planted, ahead of the 5-year average, which was largely due to favorable spring weather conditions. Emergence has been slightly slower, but is still ahead of the 5-year average.
