U.S. Bean Seeding Wrapping Up

WASHINGTON - Jun 23/14 - SNS -- Dry edible bean growers in the United States are wrapping up seeding in most states, judging from the latest state level crop progress reports from USDA NASS reporters.

Farmers in Michigan made excellent progress seeding this year's dry edible bean crops during the past week even though wet conditions hindered fieldwork in some parts of the state. Growers have planted 92% of this year's intended acreage, with 67% of the emerged. Topsoil moisture conditions are rated 74% adequate, 19% surplus, and 7% short. Subsoil moisture conditions are rated 76% adequate, 18% surplus, and 6% short.

In Minnesota, widespread precipitation during the past week left soil saturated, stressing crops and delaying efforts to finish planting. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 0% very short, 0% short, 42% adequate, and 58% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 0% very short, 0% short, 47% adequate, and 53% surplus. Topsoil and subsoil surplus moisture conditions jumped 18 and 22 points respectively from the previous week.

In Montana, heavy rains fell over much of the state for the second straight week. Topsoil moisture rated adequate and surplus is 79% compared with 90% last year and the 5 year average of 82%. Subsoil moisture was rated 75% adequate and surplus compared to 80% last year and the 5 year average of 80%.
