Above Average U.S. Bean Seeding Progress

WASHINGTON - Jun 17/14 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's dry edible bean crop in the United States made excellent progress during the past week, with rapid progress in North Dakota and other key states offsetting below average progress in Michigan, judging from the latest state level crop progress reports from USDA NASS reporters.

Farmers in Michigan are now planting this year's dry edible bean crops, with 30% in the ground and 10% emerged by June 15. This is less than half the recent five-year average for this time of year.

Weather conditions are good in many parts of the state. Farmers are also seeding into moisture, with topsoil moisture conditions rated 73% adequate, 13% surplus, and 13% short. Subsoil moisture conditions are rated 73% adequate, 14% surplus, and 10% short.

Seeding progress has pushed ahead of normal in North Dakota, with 94% of the crop now in the ground, compared to the recent five-year average of 86%. Emergence is also well ahead of normal, reaching 68% by the middle of June, compared to the recent average of 55%.
