Dry Bean Seeding Spreads Across U.S.

WASHINGTON - May 20/14 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's dry edible bean crops is underway in all major producing states except Michigan, judging from the latest state level crop progress reports from USDA NASS reporters.

Michigan does not normally start seeding dry edible bean until June, but it is clear from conditions in the state that little or no seeding of other crops has taken place. Cold and rainy conditions left farmers in the state with just 1.4 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 18.

Farmers in Minnesota make some progress seeding this year's dry edible bean crop despite continued cool and wet conditions. Temperatures remained below normal, and much of the state received frost this week.

Widespread precipitation allowed topsoil and subsoil moisture in Minnesota to remain steady. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 0% very short, 0% short, and 69% adequate, and 31% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 0% very short, 6% short, 76% adequate, and 18% surplus.
