Dry Bean Seeding Inches Forward

WASHINGTON - May 12/14 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's dry edible bean crops continues to make good progress in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, but no activity is being reported in key production states in the central and eastern United States.

No seeding progress was reported in North Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, or Michigan. But progress is reported in Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Colorado.

Drier and warmer days allowed farmers in Michigan to make progress seeding crops, though there were no reports of dry edible beans going into the ground. Progress for most crops still lags behind the five-year average.

Farmers in Minnesota were able to make moderate planting progress, but have yet to report seeding dry edible beans. Progress for other crops was reported on sandier soils, before planting was once again halted by rains late in the week. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 0% very short, 0% short, and 60% adequate, and 40% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 0% very short, 7% short, 71% adequate, and 22% surplus.
