Massive Drop in Canadian Chickpea Area

VANCOUVER - Apr 27/14 - SNS -- International chickpea markets paid little attention to Statistics Canada's seeding intentions estimates for the crop.

The late March survey found farmers intend to cut area from 180,000 to 100,000 acres. The federal agency only estimates chickpea area in Saskatchewan. Kabuli chickpeas are also grown in Alberta, but Statistics Canada considers the area too small to estimate.

Data from the Alberta's crop insurance corporation suggests at least 10,500 acres of chickpeas were grown in the province last year, compared to 20,000 in 2012 and 12,500 in 2011. If acreage declines in the same proportion as Saskatchewan, this year's seedings would come in around 6,000 acres for a Canadian total of 106,000, down from 190,500 last year.
