High Prices Lifts SAF Bean Area

PRETORIA - Jan 28/14 - SNS -- Farmers in South Africa are on the verge of planting their biggest dry edible bean crop of the past decade, according to the latest crop report from the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

Total area is expected to reach 56,170 hectares, up 29% from last year and 32% above the previous five-year average seeded area.

The last time area rose above 56,000 hectares was 2004, when South Africa produced 80,000 metric tons (MT) of beans from 56,200 hectares. SAGIS did not forecast production, but if yields are at their recent five-year average, this year's crop will total 70,800 MT.
