Chickpeas Maintain Values in Light TradeVANCOUVER - Jun 20/08 - SNS -- International chickpea markets were little changed in light trade during the past week, despite forecasts of larger desi and kabuli crops in Australia. The latest forecast from Pulse Australia predict kabuli chickpea output could jump from 24,550 to 48,250 metric tons (MT) as seeded area jumps from 23,800 to 36,700 hectares. Desi chickpea output is forecast at 348,230 MT from 261,000 hectares, up from 288,4500 from 282,200 hectares last year. The increase in kabuli output comes at a time when production in Turkey, Mexico, Canada and the United States is declining -- making it more difficult for markets to find a bearish lining in a more optimistic Australian forecast.
