Chickpea Markets Hold SteadyVANCOUVER - May 24/08 - SNS -- International chickpea markets were little changed in light trade during the past week, even though supply concerns are beginning to build because of reduced crops across North America and Turkey. On the supply side of the equation, kabuli chickpea area will be down sharply in Canada this year, perhaps plunging 57% to 185,000 acres, while seedings in the United States are expected to drop 22% to 98,500 acres, and Mexico experienced a 17% decline in seeded area to 57,706 hectares. Despite these pending reductions in production, market demand is managing to remain behind the quantities available from exporters, preventing markets from developing any upward momentum.
