Modest Gains in Turkey HatcheryWASHINGTON - May 14/08 - SNS -- Turkey hatchery activity showed modest improvement in April, with more poults hatched and eggs in incubators by the end of the month, according to the latest USDA report on the sector. Turkey eggs in incubators on May 1, 2008, in the United States totaled 33.1 million, up 1% from May 1, 2007. Eggs in incubators were up 4% from the April 1, 2008 total of 31.9 million eggs. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central up 1% at 4,694,000; West North Central down 3% at 12,401,000; North and South Atlantic up 6% at 11,625,000; and South Central and West down 2% at 4,428,000 eggs in incubators. Turkey poults hatched during April 2008, in the United States totaled 26.5 million, up 1% from April 2007. Poults hatched were down 1% from the March 2008 total of 26.8 million poults.
