Portugal Scrambles to Cover Feed ShortfallLISBON - Dec 9/03 - SNS -- Tight European grain supplies and a disastrous local harvest on account of this year's drought has sent Portuguese millers and compound feed manufacturers scrambling for alternate sources of supply. According to the national statistics office (INE), 2003 output of durum and soft wheat were down by 55% and 45% relative to 2002 levels for a combined total of 203,000 metric tons (MT) of wheat.
