PEI Potato Growers Get $14.1 MillionOTTAWA - Mar 21/01 - STAT -- The Canadian government will pay Prince Edward Island (PEI) potato growers CDN $14.1 million to help them dispose of this year's surplus, caused by a U.S. trade embargo. Under the deal, growers will get $12.6 million to help dispose of surplus potatoes in an environmentally responsible manner, while another $1.5 million will go to transport surplus potatoes to food banks across Canada. The assistance will be distributed to producers through the PEI Potato Board. The Board is responsible for administering the potato disposal, and will receive additional funding to do so. The surplus is a result of import restrictions imposed by the United States on Oct. 31, 2000 after potato wart disease was discovered in a PEI field.
