United States Onion and Potato Market Trend Report

WASHINGTON - Jul 7/04 - SNS -- The latest weekly onion and potato market trend report was released by the USDA today.

26, AND JULY 3, 2004 IN THAT ORDER IN THOUSAND HUNDRED WEIGHT (100,000 LBS) UNITS.
EXPECTED MOVEMENT IS FOR THE PERIOD JULY 4-JULY 17, 2004.  PRICES ARE FOR
TUESDAY, JULY 6, 2004 COMPARED WITH MONDAY, JUNE 28, 2004. UNLESS OTHERWISE
STATED SALES ARE F.O.B. SHIPPING POINT BASIS (INCLUDING DELIVERED SALES
F.O.B. SHIPPING POINT BASIS) OR PORT OF ENTRY AND EXTRA SERVICES ARE INCLUDED.
PRICES REPRESENT OPEN (SPOT) MARKET SALES BY FIRST HANDLERS ON PRODUCT OF
GENERALLY GOOD QUALITY AND CONDITION UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED AND MAY INCLUDE

   SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA---Shipments 341-326-388---Movement expected to
remain about the same.  Trading Red Types Jumbo active, others fairly slow.
Prices Red Types slightly higher, Yellow Grano slightly lower, White Type
generally unchanged.  40 pound carton Red Flat Type jumbo 8.00-9.00, 25 pound
sacks Red Flat Type Jumbo 5.00-6.00, Red Globe Type jumbo 6.00-7.00, medium
mostly 4.50-5.00.  50 pound sacks Yellow Grano Super colossal 9.00-10.00,
colossal mostly 6.50-7.00, jumbo mostly 5.00-5.50, medium mostly 4.50.

   NEW MEXICO---Shipments 279-347-254---Movement expected to increase to
around pre-holiday levels.  Trading yellow medium, white and red fairly
active; others fairly slow.  Prices yellow super colossal, colossal, and
jumbo lower, others generally unchanged.  Yellow Grano 50 pound sacks Super
Colossal mostly 14.00, Colossal mostly 8.00, Jumbo mostly 6.00, Medium 6.00,
Repacker size 6.00.  White 50 pound sacks Jumbo mostly 10.00, medium 8.00.
Red 25 pound sacks Jumbo mostly 8.00, medium mostly 6.00.
   VIDALIA DISTRICT, GEORGIA---Shipments 108-105-96---Movement expected
to remain about the same. Trading moderate. Prices higher.  Yellow Granex
type U.S. One 40 pound cartons colossal 16.00, jumbo mostly 14.00, medium
mostly 12.00.  Supplies are primarily from controlled atmosphere storage
along with some from cold storage units.
   WALLA WALLA DISTRICT WASHINGTON---Shipments 17-46-40 (includes export
0-4-1)---Movement expected to increase slightly. Trading fairly active.
Prices lower. Walla Walla Sweets 50 pound sacks medium mostly 7.00.
40 pound cartons colossal mostly 12.00, jumbo mostly 10.00, medium mostly
7.00.
   ARIZONA---Shipments 44-61-56---Movement expected about the same.  Unofficial
prices for Tuesday, July 6th, Yellow Grano 50 pound sacks jumbo 5.50.
   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON---Shipments 0-0-2---Movement expected to remain
about the same.  Trading moderate.  Prices Yellow hybrid 50 pound sacks jumbo
5.00-6.00, medium 5.00.
   WISCONSIN---2004 CROP UPDATE---The crop planted in the Southwestern part
of the state, on sandy soil, is progressing fairly well.  Recent rainfall has
affected fields in low lining areas.  Crops in the central region of the
State, planted in muck soils, were affected much more by a wet spring.
Several acres are being replanted and a delay in harvest is expected.
---POTATOES
   UPPER VALLEY, TWIN FALLS-BURLEY DISTRICT IDAHO---Shipments 630-678-589---
Movement expected to remain about the same current week and increase slightly
the week of July 11.  Trading cartons moderate, others fairly active.  Prices
generally unchanged.  Russet Burbank U.S. One baled 5 10-pound mesh bags
non-size A mostly 2.25-2.50, 50 pound cartons 40-50s mostly 10.00-10.25,
60s 10.00-10.50, 70s mostly 11.00, 80s mostly 10.00, 90s mostly 6.00,
100s mostly 5.00.  2004 CROP UPDATE:  The crop is currently in good condition.
Most of the crop from the Rexburg area and south expect rows to close the week
of July 11.  Growers expect to begin killing vines July 12 in the Glenns Ferry
area (near Twin Falls) and then begin digging July 27.
   KERN DISTRICT, CALIFORNIA---Shipments 533-515-489---Movement expected to
decrease slightly as the season winds down.  Trading Round Red, Yellow type
and Russet Norkotah fairly active, Long White moderate.  Prices Russet carton
50-80s lower, others slightly higher.  U.S. One Russet Norkotah baled
5 10-pound film bags non size A 4.00-5.00, 50 pound cartons 50-70s mostly
11.00, 80s 9.00-10.00, 90s 7.00-8.00, 100s 7.00.  50 pound cartons Round Red
size A mostly 7.00-8.00, size B mostly 9.00-12.00.  50 pound cartons Long

   SAN LUIS VALLEY COLORADO---Shipments 279-266-239---Movement expected to
decrease slightly as the season winds down.  Trading cartons fairly active,
others fairly slow.  Prices generally unchanged.  Russet Nugget and some
Russet Centennial and Norkotah U.S. One baled 5 10-pound film bags non size
A mostly 2.25-2.50, 50 pound cartons 40-70s mostly 10.00, 80s 7.00-8.00,
90s mostly 5.50-6.00, 100s mostly 5.00, U.S. Commercial unwashed bulk per
hundredweight (cwt) size A 3.50-4.50.
   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON & UMATILLA BASIN OREGON 2003 CROP---Shipments
All Washington Districts 111-152-167 (includes export 20-22-12), Umatilla
Basin, OR 57-23-36 (includes export 7-1-2)---Movement expected to decrease.
Remaining supplies in too few hands to establish a market. Remaining shippers
anticipate running through the end of July.  LAST REPORT FOR 2003 CROP.
   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON & UMATILLA BASIN OREGON 2004 CROP---
Shipments Very Light---Movement expected to increase. Supplies in too few
hands to establish a market. Several more sheds anticipate running new
crop Round Red potatoes by July 8 and the rest will follow by the weekend.
The first of the Russet Norkotah crop is expected to be available the week
of July 18 and with more volume the following week.
   CENTRAL WISCONSIN---Shipments 169-135-107---Movement expected to decrease
as most marketers have finished for the season.  Most shipments are from prior
bookings and there are too few new sales to establish a market.  Light
shipments expected to continue to around July 15.  LAST REPORT.    2004 CROP
UPDATE:  Weather conditions have dried out in much of the growing regions
over the past 10 days.  Mild temperatures continue to promote good crop
growth and anticipated good tuber development.  Late blight has not been
noted.  The Round Red harvest is expected to start mid-July.
   EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA---Shipments 6-32-58---Movement expected to
remain about the same.  Trading moderate.  Prices generally unchanged.
50 pound sacks Round White US One size A 5.00, large 7.00; Round Red
size A mostly 7.00, size B 9.00-10.00; Yukon Gold size A mostly 10.00.
Quality good.
   ELIZABETH CITY DISTRICT, NORTH CAROLINA---Shipments 33-66-44---
Movement expected to increase. Trading moderate. Prices generally unchanged.
50 pound sacks Round White Superior U.S. One size A 5.00-5.30, Round Red
Norland U.S. One size A 6.30-7.00.  Wet fields delayed harvest during the
week of June 27.
   HEREFORD-HIGH PLAINS TEXAS---Shipments 0-0-17---Movement expected to
increase seasonally. Trading fairly active.  Prices Round Red U.S. One
100 pound sacks size A mostly 10.00.  50 pound cartons size A mostly 7.50,
size B mostly 10.00.  Harvest of Round White and Yukon Gold are expected to
begin the week of July 11.  The harvest of the Russet Norkotah crop is
expected to begin in mid-July.  Unofficial reports of 3 to 3 1/2 inches of
rain has fallen in the area in early July.  The crop is currently in good
condition.  FIRST REPORT.
   DELAWARE---Shipments Very Light---Movement expected to increase slightly
as the season gets underway. According to USDA-NASS, approximately 3,300
acres were planted, with 3,200 acres projected to be harvested this year. The
lack of rainfall has caused some growers to irrigate. The southern half of the
state has been especially hampered by dry weather.   Preliminary industry
reports indicate that at this time, potatoes have an 80% skin set. The first
F.O.B. report is expected to be released around July 12, 2004.  FIRST REPORT.
---POTATOES FOR PROCESSING
   IDAHO---Open-market trading by processors with growers was inactive.
By July 10, processors will be hauling Columbia Basin potatoes to western
Idaho fry plants.
   ELIZABETH CITY DISTRICT, NORTH CAROLINA---Shipments to Chippers
263-291-354---Movement expected to remain about the same. Trading slow.
Prices unchanged.  Round White Atlantic 85% or better U.S. One bulk per
hundredweight contract sales 1 7/8 inch minimum 5.75-6.75, per hundredweight
open market sales 1 7/8 inch minimum 3.00.
   NORTH FLORIDA---Shipments To Chippers 856-639-148---Movement expected to
decrease sharply as the season is practically finished.  LAST REPORT.
   EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA---Shipments Light---Movement expected to
increase seasonably. Trading slow.  Most movement on preseason contracts.
Prices sales to processors Round White 85% U.S. One mostly 1 5/8 inch
minimum contract sales per hundredweight mostly 6.00-6.50. Too few open
market sales to establish market. Quality good.
