4% of UK Farmland Now OrganicLONDON - Jul 7/04 - SNS -- The amount of agricultural land involved in or converting to organic production totalled 695,619 hectares or 4% of all agricultural land as of January 2004. In releasing the data, the United Kingdom's Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) said 66,137 hectares was in-conversion and 629,482 hectares was fully organic. "Whilst the fully organic area has increased by 17% from March 2003, the area of land in conversion has fallen by 68%," DEFRA noted in its report.
