Poultry Slaughter Activity Down in MayWASHINGTON - Jul 6/04 - SNS -- The USDA reports the quantity of poultry slaughtered and certified wholesome during May 2004 (ready-to-cook weight) totaled 3.27 billion pounds, down 2% from the amount certified in May 2003. Updated totals for April 2004 show that 3.32 billion pounds were certified. The preliminary total live weight of poultry inspected during May 2004 was 4.39 billion pounds, down 2 % from a year ago. Young chickens inspected totaled 3.74 billion pounds, down 1% from May 2003, and mature chickens at 64.3 million pounds, were down 11% from the previous year. Turkey inspections totaled 564 million pounds, down 8%, and ducks totaled 13.8 million pounds, up 4% from last year. Young chickens slaughtered during May 2004 averaged 5.24 pounds per bird, up 1% from May 2003. The average live weight of mature chickens was 5.55 pounds per bird, up 1% from a year ago.
