Tree Nut Output Falls 16% in 2000WASHINGTON -- Jul 9/01 - STAT -- Total tree nut production in the United States posted a 16% decline in the year 2000, dropping to 1.09 million tons on an inshell basis. In releasing its final report on the 2000 crop, the USDA noted growers harvested a record high pistachio crop of 121,500 tons was realized, up 98% from 1999. By contrast, all other tree nuts showed the effects of alternate bearing with lower production than in the previous year. Almond production totaled 573,400 tons, down 15%. Hazelnut tonnage for the 2000 crop totaled 24,000 tons, down 40% from the previous year. Walnut production totaled 239,000 tons, a 16% decrease. Macadamia production, at 25,000 tons, was off 12%. Pecan production totaled 104,900 tons, a 48% decrease. The 2000 U.S. value of utilized nut production decreased less than 1% to 1.50 billion dollars.
