Poultry Slaughter Expands in MayWASHINGTON - Jul 6/01 - STAT -- Poultry slaughter activity expanded in May, with 3.35 billion pounds certified wholesome to eat, up 2% from the amount certified in May 2000, according to the latest USDA report. Updated totals for April 2001 show that 2.97 billion pounds were certified. The preliminary total live weight of poultry inspected during May 2001 was 4.50 billion pounds, up 1% from a year ago. Inspections included 3.80 billion pounds of young chickens, 2% above last year; 74.1 million pounds of mature chickens, down 10%; 614 million pounds of turkeys, down 2%; and 15.5 million pounds of ducks, up 20% from May 2000. Young chickens slaughtered during May 2001 averaged 5.07 pounds per bird, up 2% from May 2000. The average live weight of mature chickens was 5.40 pounds per bird, up 2% from a year ago. Turkeys slaughtered during May 2001 averaged 26.4 pounds per bird, up 1% from May 2000. Ante-mortem condemnations during May 2001 totaled 17.0 million pounds. Condemnations were 0.38% of the live weight inspected, compared with 0.37% a year earlier. Post-mortem condemnations, at 61.7 million pounds (N.Y. dressed weight), were 1.52% of quantities inspected, compared with 1.62% a year earlier.
