Broiler Hatchery Activity Advances
WASHINGTON - Jul 5/01 - STAT -- The quantity of eggs set during the week ending June 30 by hatcheries posted a significant increase over year earlier levels, according to the latest production data assembled by the USDA.
Commercial hatcheries in the 15-State weekly program set 181 million eggs in incubators. This was up 3% from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 83%. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.
Broiler growers in the 15-State weekly program placed 151 million chicks for meat production. Placements were up slightly from the comparable week in 2000. Cumulative placements from December 31, 2000 through June 30, 2001 were 3.83 billion, down slightly from the same period a year earlier.
