Indian Spice Exports Get Strong StartDELHI - Jul 4/01 - STAT -- India's spice exports are off to a good start this season, with shipments during the first two months of the 2001-02 marketing campaign jumping 23% ahead of export clearances during April and May of the year 2000. Shipments of most products were up over last year, but the steepest gains were recorded by turmeric and pepper. Turmeric shipments were up 2,000 metric tons (MT) at 6,500 MT, while pepper exports jumped 1,900 MT to 5,900.Solid gains were also recorded in export clearances of cumin, advancing from 500 MT to 1,900 this year. These gains more than offset major declines in coriander and garlic clearances, from 2,500 and 1,200 MT to 1,200 and 650 MT respectively. Shipments of all spices totaled 37,940 MT during the first two months of the current sales campaign, up from 30,820 MT last year.
