Dairy Product Output Up Over AprilWASHINGTON - Jul 3/01 - STAT -- Rising dairy product manufacturing activity in the United States in May failed to lift output above year earlier levels for most products, according to the latest data compiled by the USDA. American type cheese production totaled 310 million pounds, 3.9% below May 2000 but 5.2% above April 2001. Total cheese output (excluding cottage cheese) was 707 million pounds, 3.1% below May 2000 but 4.8% above April 2001. Cream cottage cheese production was 34.0 million pounds, 5.5% above May 2000 and 14.0% above April 2001. Lowfat cottage cheese production was 34.1 million pounds, 4.5% above May 2000 and 15.1% above April 2001. Butter production was 111 million pounds in May, 1.6% above May 2000 and 4.4% above April 2001. Frozen dessert: (comparisons with May 2000): Ice cream, Regular (hard) --- 79.0 million gallons, down 6.0%; Ice cream, Lowfat (total) --- 40.4 million gallons, up 4.3%; Ice cream, Nonfat (hard) --- 2.02 million gallons, down 10.8%; Sherbet (hard) --- 5.01 million gallons, down 3.8%; and Frozen Yogurt (total) --- 7.63 million gallons, down 13.8%. Dry milk products: (comparisons with May 2000): Nonfat dry milk for human food --- 139 million pounds, up 0.9%; Dry whole milk --- 3.10 million pounds, down 73.4%; and Dry buttermilk --- 4.80 million pounds, up 1.9%.
