United States Onion and Potato Market Trend Report

WASHINGTON - Jun 15/04 - SNS -- The latest weekly onion and potato market trend report was released by the USDA today.

AND 12, 2004 IN THAT ORDER IN THOUSAND HUNDRED WEIGHT (100,000 LBS) UNITS.
EXPECTED MOVEMENT IS FOR THE PERIOD JUNE 13-26, 2004.  PRICES ARE FOR
MONDAY, JUNE 14, 2004 COMPARED WITH MONDAY, JUNE 7, 2004. UNLESS OTHERWISE
STATED SALES ARE F.O.B. SHIPPING POINT BASIS (INCLUDING DELIVERED SALES
F.O.B. SHIPPING POINT BASIS) OR PORT OF ENTRY AND EXTRA SERVICES ARE INCLUDED.
PRICES REPRESENT OPEN (SPOT) MARKET SALES BY FIRST HANDLERS ON PRODUCT OF
GENERALLY GOOD QUALITY AND CONDITION UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED AND MAY INCLUDE
PROMOTIONAL ALLOWANCES OR OTHER INCENTIVES.  NO CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO

ONIONS AND POTATOES
---ONIONS, DRY
   SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA---Shipments 50-126-290---Movement expected
to increase slightly as the last remaining shippers enter into the deal.
Trading moderate.  Prices Red Globe Type higher, Red Flat Type and Yellow
medium lower, others generally unchanged.  40 pound carton Red Flat Type
jumbo mostly 7.00, 25 pound sacks Red Flat Type Jumbo 4.00-5.50, medium
3.75-4.50, Red Globe Type jumbo 5.50-6.00, medium 4.50-5.00.  50 pound sacks
Yellow Grano Super colossal (wide range in price) 10.00-15.00, colossal mostly
8.00, jumbo mostly 6.50-7.00, medium mostly 4.50-5.00.  The supply of
single-centered super colossal currently is very light.
    VIDALIA DISTRICT, GEORGIA---Shipments 166-162-105---Movement expected
to decrease slightly.  Trading moderate. Prices higher with supplies coming
mostly from cold storage units along with some supplies from controlled
atmosphere storage. Yellow Granex type U.S. One 40 pound cartons
colossal 12.00-14.00, jumbo mostly 12.00, medium mostly 10.00.
   NEW MEXICO---Shipments 29-120-105---Movement expected to remain about the
same.  Trading moderate.  Prices Yellow Super Colossal and Colossal higher,
Red medium generally unchanged, others lower.  Yellow Grano 50 pound sacks
Super Colossal mostly 14.00-15.00, Colossal 10.00, Jumbo 7.00-8.00, Medium
and Repacker size mostly 4.00-4.50, White Jumbo 8.00, medium 6.00-7.00,
Red 25 pound sacks Jumbo mostly 7.00, medium 5.00-6.00.
   SAN ANTONIO-WINTER GARDEN-LAREDO DISTRICT---Shipments 154-105-80---
Movement expected to decrease.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices Yellow medium
generally unchanged, others lower.  Yellow Grano 50 pound sacks jumbo
7.50-8.00, medium 4.50-5.00, repacker size 4.00-4.50.  Scattered rain during
the week of June 6 delayed harvest and created some quality issues.
Shipments will continue over the next couple of weeks.  LAST REPORT.
   ARIZONA---Shipments 66-73-63---Movement expected about the same.
Unofficial prices for Monday, June 14th, Yellow Grano 50 pound sacks jumbo
7.50-8.00.
   WALLA WALLA DISTRICT WASHINGTON---CROP UPDATE---Cool, wet and windy weather
has delayed the harvest.  Sunny and warm temperatures are predicted to be
prevalent during the week of June 13.  Digging should be in full swing by
June 19.
   CENTRAL WISCONSIN---CROP UPDATE---The onion crop, generally grown on
heavier muck soils, has received plentiful rainfall during May and June.
Heavy rains the week of June 6 (up to 8 inches in local areas) may affect
the quality.  The harvest will get underway in August.
---POTATOES
   UPPER VALLEY, TWIN FALLS-BURLEY DISTRICT IDAHO---Shipments 625-512-568---
Movement expected to remain about the same.  Trading U.S.Two active, others
fairly slow.  Prices slightly lower.  Russet Burbank U.S. One baled
5 10-pound mesh bags non-size A 2.10-2.50, 50 pound cartons 40-50s 10.00-10.50,
60s mostly 10.00-11.00, 70s 10.50-11.50, 80s mostly 10.00, 90s mostly 6.00,
100s mostly 5.00.  2004 CROP UPDATE:  The Upper Valley received very welcome
rain last Thursday, June 9th.
   KERN DISTRICT, CALIFORNIA---Shipments 344-333-475---Movement expected to
increase slightly as the harvest on the Russet Norkotah crop remains active.
Trading Russet Norkotah active, others fairly slow.  Prices Long White,
Round Red and Yellow Type and Russet carton 80s lower, others unchanged.
U.S. One Russet Norkotah baled 5 10-pound film bags non size A 4.00-5.00,
50 pound cartons 50-70s 12.00, 80s 10.00-11.00, 90s 8.00, 100s 7.00,
Round Red size A mostly 6.00, size B mostly 7.00-8.00, Long White size A
6.00-7.00, Yellow Type size A 7.00-9.00, size B 4.00-6.00.
   SAN LUIS VALLEY COLORADO---Shipments 356-277-294 (includes exports
5-3-unavailable)---Movement expected to remain about the same.  Trading
cartons fairly active, others fairly slow.  Prices 50 pound cartons 40-70s,
10 ounce and 90s higher, 100s lower, others generally unchanged.  Russet
Nugget and some Russet Centennial and Norkotah U.S. One baled 5 10-pound
film bags non size A mostly 2.25-2.50, 50 pound cartons 40-70s mostly 10.00,
80s 7.00-8.00, 90s mostly 5.50-6.00, 100s mostly 5.00, U.S. Commercial
unwashed bulk per hundredweight (cwt) size A 3.50-4.50.
   CENTRAL WISCONSIN---Shipments 220-191-179---Movement expected to continue
decreasing seasonally.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices generally unchanged.
U.S. One Russet Norkotah baled 5 10-pound film bags non-size A 2.75, 50 pound
cartons 50-70s mostly 9.00-9.75, 80s mostly 6.50-7.50, 90s 5.00-5.50,
100s mostly 4.00-5.00.  Quality variable.  2004 CROP UPDATE:  Additional
rainfall received during the week of June6 left heavier muck soils (mostly
Round Red and chip stock acreage) saturated.  Growers are applying blight
sprays between rains.  Russet acreage, grown on sandier soils, is
progressing more favorably.  Rows are expected to close during the week of
June 13 on the first Russet Burbank fields (for processing).
   NORTH FLORIDA---Shipments 156-178-169---Movement expected to decrease.
Trading Round Red slow, Round White very slow.  Prices Round Red and
Round White size A slightly lower, others generally unchanged. Round Red
U.S. One 50 lb cartons 3/4-1 5/8 inches 20.30.  U.S. One 50 pound sacks
size A 6.30, size B 9.30; Round White U.S. One 50 lb sacks size A mostly
5.30, size B 4.30.  Quality good.
   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON & UMATILLA BASIN OREGON---Shipments All
Washington Districts 282-179-148 (includes export 27-25-24)---Shipments
Umatilla Basin, OR 25-42-* (includes export 4-10-*)---Movement expected about
the same or decrease slightly. Trading carton 40-80s fairly active, others
moderate. Prices generally higher. Mostly Russet Norkotah US One 2 inch
or 4 ounce minimum. Baled 5 10-pound filmbags non Size A 2.00-2.50,
10 5-pound filmbags non Size A 3.00-3.50, 50 pound cartons 40s 7.50-8.00,
50s 8.00-9.00, 60-70s mostly 9.00-9.50, 80s mostly 8.00, 90s mostly
5.50-6.00, 100s mostly 4.50. Quality generally good. Some sheds are finishing

   CENTRAL ARIZONA---Shipments 97-46-45---Movement expected to remain about
the same.  Trading slow.  Prices size A lower, others generally unchanged.
U.S. One Round Red 50 pound carton size A 6.00-7.00, size B 6.00-9.25.
   KLAMATH BASIN (NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND SOUTHERN OREGON)---Shipments
32-27-*---Movement expected to decrease. Supplies in too few hands to
establish a market. Light offerings expected for several weeks. LAST
REPORT.
    ELIZABETH CITY DISTRICT, NORTH CAROLINA---Most growers expect to begin
the harvest by Wednesday, June 16.  Rains over the previous weekend has
delayed the harvest.
   EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA---Shipments very light---Movement expected
to increase seasonably. Current supplies are very light and in too few
hands to establish market.  Expect the first F.O.B. report to be
released during the week of June 20.
   NEW BRUNSWICK(CROSSINGS THROUGH MAINE POINTS)---Shipments expected
to continue until the end of June. Most sheds finished for the season.

---POTATOES FOR PROCESSING
   IDAHO---Open-market trading by processors with growers was very slow.
Open-market prices paid to growers for Russet Burbank potatoes, storage-run,
bulk, per hundredweight (cwt), F.O.B. growers storage unless otherwise
stated:  French-Fry Quality 2.00 U.S. Two Process Grade 1 5/8 inch minimum.
Trading of the storage Russet crop appears to have come to a close, except
for the occasional small purchase to accommodate last-minute processing
plant run-schedules.
    NORTH FLORIDA---Shipments To Chippers 972-1162-885---Movement expected to
decrease.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices generally unchanged.  Round White
Atlantic 85% or Better U.S. One bulk per hundredweight (cwt) contract sales
1 7/8 inch minimum 7.00-7.50, open market sales 1 7/8 inch minimum 3.00.
Quality Good.
   ELIZABETH CITY DISTRICT, NORTH CAROLINA---Shipments To Chippers 0-20-59---
Movement expected to increase as more growers begin the harvest.  Trading
very slow on open market.  Prices Round White Atlantic 85% or Better U.S.
One bulk per hundred weight contract sales 1 7/8 inch minimum 5.00-6.75,
open market sales too few to establish a market.
