Hawaii's Papaya Utilization Down 8%WASHINGTON - Jun 10/04 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.44 million pounds for May, down 8% from last month and 20% lower than a year ago, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates. Area in crop totaled 2,100 acres, virtually unchanged from last month but 3% less than a year ago. Harvested area totaled 1,160 acres, unchanged from last month but 33% lower than May 2003. Weather conditions over the major producing areas were variable during May with mostly sunny skies and periods of light trade wind showers providing good growing conditions.
