Italy Expects Record Tomato HarvestROME - Jun 2/04 - SNS -- This year's harvest has the potential to reach a record 5.8 million metric tons (MT) of processing tomatoes in Italy because low residual supplies from the 2003-04 marketing year combined with favorable weather conditions to boost seeded area. This is the case even though planting activity is taking place two to three weeks later than scheduled as frequent rains did not allow access to fields before, reports the U.S. agricultural attache here. "The objective of rebuilding stocks of tomato products after a very bad 2002-03 campaign was just partially met last year, as production was affected by the exceptional heat wave and drought in May and June. The adverse climatic conditions resulted in reduced quality and volume of crops," the agricultural attache said in a report on the industry.
