United States Onion and Potato Market Trend Report

WASHINGTON - Jun 2/04 - SNS -- The latest weekly onion and potato market trend report was released by the USDA today.

AND 29, 2004 IN THAT ORDER IN THOUSAND HUNDRED WEIGHT (100,000 LBS) UNITS.
EXPECTED MOVEMENT IS FOR THE PERIOD MAY 30-JUNE 12, 2004.  PRICES ARE FOR
TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 2004 COMPARED WITH MONDAY, MAY 24, 2004. UNLESS OTHERWISE
STATED SALES ARE F.O.B. SHIPPING POINT BASIS (INCLUDING DELIVERED SALES
F.O.B. SHIPPING POINT BASIS) OR PORT OF ENTRY AND EXTRA SERVICES ARE INCLUDED.
PRICES REPRESENT OPEN (SPOT) MARKET SALES BY FIRST HANDLERS ON PRODUCT OF
GENERALLY GOOD QUALITY AND CONDITION UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED AND MAY INCLUDE
PROMOTIONAL ALLOWANCES OR OTHER INCENTIVES.  NO CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO

ONIONS AND POTATOES
---ONIONS, DRY
   IMPERIAL VALLEY, CALIFORNIA---Shipments 435-416*-324---Movement expected to
decrease sharply as most producers have finished harvesting for the season.
Trading fairly slow.  Remaining supplies in too few hands to establish a
market.  Light shipments expected to continue for the next two weeks.
Shipments for the month of May were 4,081 400-hundredweight (cwt) units,
48 percent higher than in 2003 when 2,762 400-cwt units were shipped.

   VIDALIA DISTRICT, GEORGIA---Shipments 161-168-166---Movement expected
to decrease as the harvest winds down.  Trading fairly slow. Prices jumbo
lower, others unchanged. Yellow Granex type U.S. One 40 pound cartons
colossal mostly 9.00, jumbo 7.00-8.00, medium mostly 7.00. The majority of
fresh field shipments will be completed by June 5.  The movement of cold
storage shipments on previously stored supplies will begin in earnest the
week of June 6.
   SAN ANTONIO-WINTER GARDEN-LAREDO DISTRICT---Shipments 93-149-154---Movement
expected to decrease as some shippers finish for the season.  Trading fairly
slow.  Prices Yellow and Red jumbo generally unchanged, Yellow Super Colossal
and Colossal higher, others lower.  Yellow Grano 50 pound sacks Super colossal
10.00-12.00, colossal 9.00-10.00, jumbo mostly 8.00, medium mostly 5.00-5.50,
repacker size mostly 5.00.  White 50 pound sacks jumbo 8.00-10.00, medium
6.00-8.00.  Red 25 pound sacks jumbo 7.00, medium 5.00-6.00.  Onions shipments
for the month of May for all Texas production districts were 2,976
400-hundredweight (cwt) which was up 14% over last year.
   ARIZONA---Shipments 50-65-66---Movement expected about the same.  Unofficial
prices for Tuesday, June 1st, Yellow Grano 50 pound sacks jumbo 7.00-8.00,
medium and repacker size 4.50-5.50.
   SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA---Shipments 10-19-50---Movement expected to
increase.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices generally unchanged.  40 pound carton
Red Flat Type jumbo 7.75-8.85, medium 6.00-7.50.  25 pound sacks Red Flat Type
Jumbo 5.00-5.50, Medium 4.00-4.70.  The first F.O.B. report for Yellow Grano
type is expected by June 8.  Total monthly shipments for May were 213
400-hundredweight (cwt).  This was an increase of from last year when
119 400-cwt was shipped.
   NEW MEXICO---Shipments 0-0-29---Movement expected to increase as more
shippers enter into the deal.  Trading fairly active.  Yellow Grano 50 pound
sacks super colossal 10.00-12.00, colossal 9.00, jumbo 8.00, medium and
Repacker size mostly 5.50.  White 50 pound sacks Jumbo 8.00-10.00, medium
7.00-8.00.  Red 25 pound sacks jumbo 7.00-8.00, medium 5.00-6.00.  According
to shipper reports, due to lack of moisture received in the growing area,
yields will be affected.  The current profile for bulb size is mostly medium
and repacker size.

   UPPER VALLEY, TWIN FALLS-BURLEY DISTRICT IDAHO---Shipments 615-639-625---
Movement expected to remain about the same this week and increase following
week.  Trading moderate.  Prices baled and carton 40-50s slightly higher, others
generally unchanged.  Russet Burbank U.S. One baled 5 10-pound mesh bags
non-size A mostly 2.50, 50 pound cartons 40-50s mostly 10.00-10.50,
60s mostly 10.50-11.00, 70s mostly 11.00-11.50, 80s 10.00-10.50, 90s 6.00-6.50,
100s 5.00-5.50.  Movement for the season through May was 26.42 million
hundredweight (cwt), 6 percent below last season.
   SAN LUIS VALLEY COLORADO---Shipments 396-341-356 (includes exports 8-8-5)---
Movement expected to remain about the same.  Trading cartons fairly active,
others fairly slow.  Prices non size A lower, carton 100s and bulk higher,
others generally unchanged.  Russet Nugget/Centennial and few Norkotah U.S.
One baled 5 10-pound film bags non size A 2.25-2.50, 50 pound cartons
40-70s 10.00, 80s 7.00-8.00, 90s 5.25-6.00, 100s mostly 5.00-5.50,
U.S. Commercial unwashed bulk per hundredweight (cwt) size A 3.75-4.50.
   KERN DISTRICT, CALIFORNIA---Shipments 246-277-344---Movement expected to
increase slightly as the harvest on the Russet Norkotah crop intensifies.
Trading fairly slow.  Prices lower.  U.S. One 50 pound cartons Round Red
size A mostly 7.00, size B mostly 8.00; Long White size A 7.00-9.00; Yellow
Type size A 9.00-10.00, size B 6.00-7.00.
   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON & UMATILLA BASIN OREGON---Shipments All
Washington Districts 170-219-282 (includes export 25-34-27)---Shipments
Umatilla Basin, OR 32-14-25(includes export 4-1-4)---Movement expected
about the same. Trading carton 40-80s moderate, others fairly slow.
Prices cartons higher, others generally unchanged. Mostly Russet
Norkotah US One 2 inch or 4 ounce minimum. Baled 5 10-pound filmbags
non size A 1.75-2.25, 10 5-pound filmbags non size A 2.75-3.25, 50 pound
cartons 40s 7.00-7.50, 50s 7.50-8.50, 60-70s 8.50-9.50, 80s 6.50-8.00,
90s 5.00-6.00, 100s mostly 4.50-5.00. Quality generally good. According to
the Washington Agricultural Statistics Service, potatoes emerged for week
ending 29 May were 98%, compared to the 5 year average of 88%.
   CENTRAL WISCONSIN---Shipments 227-221-220---Movement expected to decrease
slightly.  Trading moderate.  Prices carton 50-80s higher, others generally
unchanged.  U.S. One Russet Norkotah baled 5 10-pound film bags non-size A
2.75, 50 pound cartons 50-70s mostly 8.50-9.00, 80s mostly 6.50-7.00,
90s 5.00-5.50, 100s mostly 4.25-4.50.  Few shippers have finished for the
season.  May shipments were recorded at 915,000 cwt, about 10 percent of
the U.S. Total.
   NORTH FLORIDA---Shipments 223*-162*-156---Movement expected to decrease.
Trading Round Red slow, Round White very slow.  Prices Round Red size A
lower, others generally unchanged.  Round Red U.S. One 50 pound cartons
3/4-1 5/8 inches 20.30. U.S. One 50 pound sacks size A 7.30, size B 10.30;
Round White U.S. One 50 pound sacks size A 5.30,  size B 4.30.  Quality
good.   Truck shortage curtailing movement.  *includes movement from
Central Florida
   CENTRAL ARIZONA---Shipments 96-72-97---Movement expected to decrease as
some shippers finish for the season.  Trading slow.  Prices lower.
U.S. One Round Red 50 pound carton size A mostly 7.00-8.00, size B mostly 8.00,
Creamers  3/4-1 5/8 inches mostly 20.00.
   RED RIVER VALLEY (MINNESOTA-NORTH DAKOTA)---Shipments 62-55-43---Movement
expected decrease as most shippers finish for the season.  Remaining supplies
in too few hands to establish a market and moving at contracted prices.  Light
shipments expected to continue for the next three weeks.  LAST REPORT.
   KLAMATH BASIN (NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND SOUTHERN OREGON)---Shipments
28-21-32---Movement expected about the same. Trading moderate. Prices
carton 90-100s lower, others generally unchanged. Mostly Russet Norkotah baled
filmbags non-size A 5-10 pound 3.00, 10-5 pound 4.00, 50 pound cartons
40-50s mostly 10.00, 60-70s 10.00-11.00, 80s 8.00-9.00, 90s 6.50-7.50,
100s 5.00-6.50. Quality generally good. Most sheds running on partial schedules.
   AROOSTOOK COUNTY MAINE---Shipments 59-53*-32---Movement expected to decrease
as the season winds down.  Supplies insufficient to establish a market.  Light
shipments are expected through June.   2004 Crop Update:  Most planting is
expected to be finished by June 5.  *revised    LAST REPORT.
   MICHIGAN---Shipments 45-32-31---Movement expected to decrease as the
season winds down.  Remaining supplies in too few hands to establish a
market.  Light shipments expected through June.  2004 Crop Update:
Planting continues in Northern Michigan amid scattered showers.  LAST
REPORT.
   NEW BRUNSWICK (CROSSINGS THROUGH MAINE POINTS)---Shipments 32-24-*---
Movement expected about the same.  Trading slow.  Prices unchanged.
Russet Norkotah U.S.One 2 inch or 4 ounce minimum baled 10 5-pound
filmbags  4.00-4.50, 50-pound cartons 70s mostly 6.00-6.50, 80s 5.50-6.00,
90 and 100s 5.00-5.50.  2004 Crop update:  Most planting is expected to be

   IDAHO---Open-market trading by processors with growers was inactive.
   NORTH FLORIDA---Shipments To Chippers 758*-1531*-972---
Movement expected to decrease.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices generally
unchanged.  Round White Atlantic 85% or Better U.S. One bulk per hundredweight
(cwt) 1 7/8 inch minimum contract sales 7.00-7.50, open market sales 3.00.
Quality good.    Truck shortage hampering movement.   *includes movement
from Central Florida
   MICHIGAN---Shipments to Chippers 121-100*-80---Movement expected
to decrease seasonally.  Remaining supplies in few hands for pre-season
contracts.  Too few open market sales to establish a market.   2004 Crop
update:  Some planting resumed around the first of after a long period of
showers and wet fields and cooler temperatures.  *revised   LAST REPORT.
   MAINE---Shipments to Chippers 58-66*-61---Movement expected to
decrease seasonally.  Remaining supplies in few hands for pre-season
contracts.  Too few open market sales to establish a market.  2004 Crop
Update:  Planting winding down.  *revised  LAST REPORT.

   IDAHO---Shipments 634-261-166---Total-to-date 6,521,000 hundredweight
(cwt). Total-to-date last season 7,262,000 cwt.  Final total last season

   MONTANA---Shipments 118-21-2---Total-to-date 2,412,000 hundredweight
(cwt). Total-to-date last season 2,368,000 cwt.  Final total last season

   WISCONSIN---Shipments 50-14-3---Total-to-date 1,306,000 hundredweight
