Indonesian Demand for Pulses in Snacks SteadyJAKARTA - May 19/04 - SNS -- Demand for pulses in snacks in Indonesia has remained relatively steady in recent years, allowing the import of roughly 12,000 metric tons (MT) per year of various classes of field peas, 10,000 MT of food grade soybeans and peanuts. In a recent examination of the country's snack food sector, the U.S. agricultural attache here noted total sales of peanut snacks in 2002 were approximately 70,000 tons. Pea imports for use in the snack industry are estimated at about 12,000 tons. A large portion of this segment of the snack market is dominated by SME and home-based processors, so total sales value is difficult to estimate.
