Ninety-nine percent of the shipments last week were Russet Burbank according to the federal Marketing Order Committee. The downward trend on carton prices is expected to ease with seed shipping winding down, and carton prices in other Russet districts increasing. Most shippers indicate plans to run until late July or early August with 2003 crop supplies. Statewide, 82 percent of the 2004 crop has been planted with 15 percent of the plantings emerged as of May 17th. This is ahead of last years 70 percent planted and 5 percent emerged according to the Idaho Agricultural Statistics Service). SAN LUIS VALLEY COLORADO---Shipments 368-377-396 (includes exports 13-8-8)---Movement expected to remain about the same. Trading Russet cartons active for light supply, others slow. Again some fry-quality purchases were from grower-shippers. Idaho (only) processing in April was 6.25 million hundredweight. Dehydration as well as fry usage continues to lag last year nationally. A company has introduced the first trans-fat free frozen French fry to address health concerns.
