U.S. Harvests 6% More Cotton in 2003WASHINGTON - May 12/04 - SNS -- All cotton production is estimated at 18.3 million bales, up 6% from the 2002 production, according to the latest USDA crop report. Upland cotton production is estimated at 17.8 million bales, 8% more than the previous production. The U.S. yield for upland cotton is a record high 723 pounds per acre, 71 pounds more than 2002. Harvested area, at 11.8 million acres, is 3% below last year. Upland planted area is estimated at 13.3 million acres, 3% less than last season. Data from the 7 Objective Yield States showed above average boll counts, higher weights than any of the previous six seasons, and above average harvest loss.
