Hawaii Nets Smaller Tropical Fruit HarvestWASHINGTON - May 12/04 - SNS -- Tropical fruit production in Hawaii dropped below year earlier levels in 2003 as smaller guava and papaya harvests offset gains in banana, according to the latest USDA crop report. Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.64 million pounds for April 2004, down 4% from last month and 24% below a year ago. Area in crop totaled 2,110 acres, unchanged from last month but 6% less than a year ago. Harvested area totaled 1,160 acres, virtually unchanged from last month but 33% lower than April 2003. Weather conditions over the major producing areas were mostly favorable during April. Soil moisture has been adequate in non-irrigated orchards.
