Seeding U.S. Bean Crops Barely UnderwayWASHINGTON - May 4/04 - STAT -- Seeding this year's dry edible bean crops is barely underway in the United States, with little progress reported in most of the key production areas, while states such as Washington report rapid progress. Seeding of dry edible beans is not yet underway in most parts of Michigan due to cold, wet weather. Northern counties received a lot of rain in the past two weeks, and little field work has been done due to the rains. Southern counties had not received as much rain and field activities continued. Soil moisture in the state is rated adequate on 57% of the topsoil and 60% of the subsoil; surplus on 15% of the topsoil and 5% of the subsoil; short on 20% of the topsoil and 25% of the subsoil; and very short on 8% of the topsoil and 10% of the subsoil.
