Vancouver Port Strike LoomsVANCOUVER - Apr 15/04 - SNS -- Labor unrest in Canada's transportation sector seems to have no end, with members of the Western division of the Canadian Merchant Service Guild (an association of Captains, Pilots, and Engineers) in a legal strike position as of midnight April 15. The latest contract offer from the Council of Marine Carriers (CMC) was made April 13 and rejected by the union yesterday. Officials with the Pacific Pilotage Authority said, "While attempts are being made to meet and avert any labor action, there are no further talks scheduled at this time. Both parties remain hopeful they can reach an agreement and prevent any interruption in tug services to the Port of Vancouver." The agency added it is monitoring "the situation and we do not anticipate any service disruption to MOL vessels at this time. We will endeavor to keep you advised should this issue escalate."
