United States May Chop WFP SupportWASHINGTON - Mar 30/04 - SNS -- The United States intends to carve the amount of money available to the World Food Program (WFP) by $300 million in the coming fiscal year, according to anonymous officials quoted in a news report by Reuters. USAID officials say the decision is based on perceived food aid needs in the coming year and will be adjusted upward in case of need. The cut brings the U.S. funding commitment to around $930 million, about the same as committed in 2002 and just below the recent five-year average funding level of $980 million. In 2003, the United States provided roughly 58.3% of total WFP funding. If all other nations maintain funding levels at their recent five-year average, the U.S. contribution would still amount to 53.9% of the WFP's total budget of a possible $1.8 billion.
