Peru Expects 902,000 MT Sugar HarvestLIMA - Mar 26/04 - SNS -- Peru expects this year's cane sugar output to drop 7% to 902,000 metric tons (MT) on account of severe drought at the beginning of the year, which has reduced water reservoirs in the northern part of the country to between 9% and 25% of capacity. Actual sugar cane output is expected to drop from 8.84 million MT in 2003 to a projected 8.3 million MT from 75,000 harvested hectares. The industry is hopeful, notes the U.S. agricultural attache here, that production will recover in the future and the country will be in a position to expand export sales.
