Frozen Fruit Stocks Down, Juice UpWASHINGTON - Mar 19/04 - SNS -- Stocks of fresh and frozen fruit were down from year earlier levels, according to the latest USDA report on product held in cold storage in the United States, while frozen juice supplies are up sharply. Supplies of frozen juice are up 5% from January and 7% from last year at 2,236 million pounds, according to the USDA. Some industry participants blame the increases, in part, on current interest in "low carb" diets, which has caused people to avoid juices and many vegetables in favor of increased protein consumption. Even so, supplies of frozen fruit were off 9% from January and 5% below year earlier levels at 812 million pounds. Most categories of frozen fruit were down from January, with only frozen apples and cherries showing gains on the month. The subscriber version of the article is available by Clicking here
