Brazil Expects Record Apple HarvestBRASILIA - Mar 12/04 - SNS -- Harvesting of this season's apple crop is now underway in Brazil and there is considerable optimism in the industry that production will reach a record 970,000 metric tons (MT), reports the U.S. agricultural attache here, for a 15% improvement on last year's result. The increase in production is attributed to the excellent weather conditions in the producing regions of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. These two states account for over 90% of Brazil's apple production. The quality of the apple crop in 2004 is reportedly excellent and prices are expected to remain firm since the current crop boosted mostly for significant increases in apple exports.
