Papaya Crop Sinks 25%WASHINGTON - Mar 10/04 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.82 million pounds for February, 23% lower than January and 25% below February 2003, according to the latest crop production estimates from the USDA. Area in crop totaled 2,200 acres, less than 1% below last month and 2% less than a year ago. Harvested area totaled 1,345 acres, unchanged from January but 11% lower than a year ago. Weather conditions were variable during the month of February. Soil moisture has been adequate in non-irrigated orchards. The majority of rainfall occurred during the last weeks of the month.
