Iraq Offers Uncertain OpportunityVANCOUVER - Mar 9/04 - STAT -- Iraq offers an interesting, but uncertain opportunity for pulse exporters in the United States and elsewhere, concludes a delegation from the U.S.-based National Dry Bean Council (NDBC) which recently visited Iraq and Jordan. Annual pulse demand in Iraq is believed to be close to 480,000 metric tons (MT) even though the country's governing council has indicated it is closer to 26,000 MT per month or 312,000 MT per year. A large part of the discrepancy is accounted for by the lack of data on quantities of pulses smuggled across the border from Turkey and Jordan, and possibly from Syria and Iran.
