Rapid Bird Flu Test Under DevelopmentSYDNEY - Mar 9/04 - SNS -- Australian researchers are working on a rapid test for detecting the viral H5N1 strain of avian influenza which has killed 22 people in Asia and the resulted in the culling of more than 100 million birds. The work by CSIRO Livestock Industries and the Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre (AB-CRC) aim to develop a diagnostic test which gives accurate results within six hours instead of the two or three days currently required. CEO of the AB-CRC, Dr Stephen Prowse, says the spread of the virus from domestic poultry to humans is a major concern to disease control managers world-wide. At this stage there is no evidence that the virus can be transmitted from person to person. The subscriber version of the article is available by Clicking here
