Aussie Researchers Probe Ryegrass ToxicitySYDNEY - Mar 2/04 - SNS -- Australian researchers are working to unlock the problem of Annual Ryegrass Toxicity (ARGT). Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), together with the Australian Fodder Industry Association (AFIA), have formed a coordination and advisory group that will map out a strategy to reduce the impact of ARGT. ARGT is caused by a toxin in the seedheads of annual ryegrass and causes significant numbers of sheep and cattle deaths each year in Western Australia and South Australia. MLA Project Manager Animal Health Dr Peter Rolfe said the formation of the group would allow for a broad and coordinated response to deal with ARGT.
