Michigan Apples Ship to MexicoLANSING - Feb 19/04 - MFB -- After eight years of various setbacks, West Michigan apple growers are celebrating what is expected to be their first shipment of apples to Mexico - a country they believe is a promising, new market for their fruit. On Monday, representatives from the state's apple industry announced that they intended to begin shipping West Michigan apples south of the border within days. "We believe Mexico could be our single biggest export market, selling up to 500 million cases worth $6 million annually within five years," said Denise Yockey, executive director of the Michigan Apple Committee. Developing a business relationship with Mexico has been in the works for some time thanks to a coalition between growers, shippers, marketing groups, the state Department of Agriculture, as well as the Michigan Farm Bureau and Kent County Farm Bureau.
