Railway Tonnage Slipped in 2003

OTTAWA - Feb 19/04 - SNS -- Canadian railways carried slightly less tonnage in 2003 even though the year started at a record setting pace, according to Statistics Canada. Tonnage carried ended up slipping 0.7% to 259.8 million metric MT (MT).

During the first half of 2003, railways carried 125.1 million MT, the lowest level since 1999. In the second half, however, they carried a record 134.7 million MT, up 7.6% from the first six months of 2003.

On a quarterly basis, first-quarter tonnage was the lowest since 1999. However, tonnage rose 5.5% in the second quarter, 1.0% in the third and 7.6% in the fourth, all compared with the previous quarter.

Tonnage for intermodal traffic, which is "containers and trailers on flat cars," rose 6.2% over 2002 to 26.3 million MT. Non-intermodal traffic was down 1.4% to 233.5 million MT.
