CN Strike Slated for Feb 20MONTREAL - Feb 17/04 - SNS -- Members of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union voted against a three tentative agreements signed by the union and CN Rail. The CAW notified CN yesterday that it will launch labor action against the company at 0001 hours Feb. 20, 2004, if the parties fail to reach new tentative agreements by then. The CAW's existing contracts expired on Dec. 31, 2003. CN said it regrets the membership's rejection of the Jan. 23 tentative agreements, which were bargained in good faith by CAW and CN negotiators during months of hard work. CN has contingency plans to maintain freight services in Canada in the event of a CAW strike. The CAW represents approximately 5,000 CN shopcraft, clerical and intermodal yard employees in Canada.
