China Expects to Double Sugar ImportsBEIJING - Feb 16/04 - SNS -- China's sugar imports could almost double in 2004 from an estimated 672,000 metric tons (MT) in 2003 to a projected 1.2 million MT in the face of low domestic production and falling import duties. Sugar consumption, according to the China Sugar Association, should end up between 9 and 9.5 million MT in 2003-04, far ahead of total domestic production.
