Grape Gene Sequencing Project UnderwayVANCOUVER - Feb 12/04 - SNS -- Genome British Columbia and Genome Canada are involved in a $6.2 million international research project to sequence the genes of grapes. Half the money for the project will be spent in British Columbia, Canada were researchers at the University of British Columbia's Wine Research Centre hope to find genes that will improve popular grape varieties through breeding practices to yield higher quality wines. "BC was chosen because of its worldwide reputation for having excellent genomics scientists and gene sequencing labs," the companies said in a joint press statement. "As BC has the fastest growing estate wine market in North America, both scientists and the business community anticipate that developments from this project will help keep BC's wine industry at the forefront."
