ABB Offers SA Growers New Malting VarietySYDNEY - Feb 12/04 - SNS -- Barley growers the mid-north and south-east of South Australia will have access to seed for the Lofty Nijo malting barley variety for the 2004-05 season. Named after South Australia’s Mount Lofty, the variety was developed for the Japanese market by the University of Adelaide and Japan's Sapporo Breweries. Lofty Nijo produces a plump grain, slightly better than Franklin malting barley, with screenings as low as Schooner. It has a similar malt profile to Franklin, but with better fermentability and modification. With a similar yield potential to Schooner, Lofty Nijo is not efficient on zinc deficient soils, and is susceptible to CCN, scald and both forms of net blotch.
