USDA Lifts Sugarcane Estimate 1%WASHINGTON - Feb 10/04 - SNS -- The USDA boosted its estimate of 2003 sugarcane production in its latest crop production estimates. Production of sugarcane for sugar and seed for 2003 is estimated at 34.6 million tons, up 1% from last month but 3% below last year. Acres harvested and to be harvested for sugar and seed are estimated at 996,800 for the 2003 crop year, 3% less than last year's harvested area. Yield is estimated at 34.7 tons per acre, 0.2 ton above January but the same as the 2002 crop. Estimates for all states, except Florida, are carried forward from January. Florida's yield, at 40.0 tons per acre, is 0.5 ton above the January estimate, 1.7 tons above 2002, and the highest since 1998. The subscriber version of the article is available by Clicking here
