Indian Rail Traffic Tops 550 Million MTNEW DELHI - Feb 10/04 - SNS -- Rail freight traffic in India is expected to top 550 million metric tons (MT) during the 2003-04 fiscal year, which government officials point to as a powerful signal of the underlying strength of the country's economy. Government officials said 2002-03 "witnessed a marked departure from the way economy was responding earlier. The initial target of 510 million MT of revenue earning originating freight loading had to be revised upward to 515 million MT. The year ended with 518.48 million MT, thus registering an incremental loading of 25.98 million MT. "In the current year, the freight loading target of 540 million MT was fixed. Based on the performance up to the end of December 2003, it is expected that the target may be exceeded by at least 10 million MT." The subscriber version of the article is available by Clicking here
