Agriculture Canada Predicts Fewer SpecialtiesWINNIPEG - Feb 9/04 - SNS - Agriculture Canada expects specialty crop plantings in Canada to drop 4.2% this year as Canadian farmers boost oilseeds plantings 545,000 hectares or 1.37 million acres to 7.077 million hectares or 17.5 million acres. The jump in oilseed area will also contribute to reduced cereal and coarse grain plantings, with wheat area seen dropping 2.5% to 10.392 million hectares or 25.68 million acres; while coarse grain area drops 1% to 8.982 million hectares or 22.19 million acres. Agriculture Canada believes most of the decline in specialty crop plantings will be in field peas, which it thinks could drop 5% to 1.238 million hectares or 3.06 million acres. The biggest percentage decline is predicted for mustard seed, which is seen plunging 20% to 272,000 hectares or just over 672,000 acres.
