AUSFTA Agriculture Fact SheetSYDNEY - Feb 8/04 - SNS -- The Australian government published a fact sheet today, which outlines the primary terms of the free trade agreement (AUSFTA) signed with the United States today. Under the deal, the Australian marketing boards will be able to continue as before, with the United States offering a comfort that it will not attack them in an effort to have them dismantled as it is doing in Canada. "Australia's single-desk arrangements for marketing Australian commodities to the world, such as for sugar, rice, wheat and barley, have been preserved," the fact sheet stated. The agreement will also give improved access to U.S. markets for Australian dairy and beef, thought it does not give Australia's sugar industry greater access to the protected U.S. domestic market.
